CHARGING YOUR ELECTRIC VEHICLE AT HOME
EV home charger installation is a popular method of charging for many EV owners, providing a safe and effective way of topping up your vehicle’s range.
Most home chargers will provide charging speeds of around 7kWh – twice as fast as a domestic 3-pin plug, adding between 20 and 30 miles of range to your vehicle for every hour it is plugged in. This means you can charge your vehicle overnight and wake up to a full battery, making them a popular option for individual and family cars alike.
Contrary to popular belief, home EV charging is much more cost-effective than relying on public charge points, as you can schedule your charges for off-peak times, paying lower rates for the energy you use.

PLANNING YOUR EV CHARGER HOME INSTALLATION
When considering an EV home charger installation, there are a few factors you may need to consider:
LOCATION
Firstly, does your home have private off-street parking? We will only be able to perform a home installation if you have your own dedicated parking area.
If you live in a block of flats or apartments, you will need to seek permission from the building owner before having a charge point installed (even if you own the residence), this also applies to those living in rented accommodation. There are grants available to help with the cost of this, such as the Electric Vehicle ChargePoint Grant, which contribute a percentage of the cost towards your home EV charger.
You should also consider the logistics of your home, and where the best location for your EV charger would be. Your installer will need to create a cabling route to your mains power. Popular locations for home charger installation include inside garages and at the front or side of the property, near where you would park your vehicle.
YOUR CHARGER
When it comes to choosing your charger, our EV charging installers will recommend a 7kW charge point for homes, as this is the maximum power that most UK homes are able to supply. However, if you have a 3-phase electricity supply at home then you could choose to install a 22kW charging device which will charge your EV faster.
Before your installation, the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) needs to be notified. This is to ensure that these devices are installed appropriately and safely and will not affect the local grid supply. To make your installation as stress-free as possible, Yü Charge are happy to complete this on your behalf. If you choose to go ahead with our competitive quote, we’ll send you an EV review to complete ahead of your installation, and then we’ll take care of the rest!
EV HOME CHARGER INSTALLATION PROCESS
At Yü Charge, we’ve streamlined the EV home charger installation process, to make things as easy as possible for our customers.
Here’s what you can expect from your installation:
Complete an EV review to find out if you’re eligible for home installation. Our EV review allows us to give you a comprehensive quote, with no hidden costs or nasty surprises on the day of your installation.
Once completed, our experts will advise on the best charge point and provide you with a quote for your installation. If you are eligible for any grants, Yü Charge will take care of any associated compliance work.
On the day of your installation, your engineer will carry out any necessary checks of your property and discuss the process with you.
The engineer will test your EV charging device and explain how everything works, including ‘pairing’ your charger with your smartphone and home wi-fi.
Throughout the installation the engineer will record all the details of your equipment and setup, including taking photos of key stages of the installation. Your engineer will also answer any questions you have, and help you get set up and begin charging.
You’re all set! Once completed, you will be able to contact our aftercare team if you have any questions or issues.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
CAN I CHARGE MY EV AT HOME, USING A REGULAR 3-PIN SOCKET?
Technically, yes. But it isn’t recommended.
Regular 3-pin sockets, as found in domestic homes, are not designed for continuous high-power usage. Although they will charge your vehicle, they will do so very slowly and will run the risk of damaging your home’s electrical system or in worst cases, cause a fire.
IS IT CHEAPER TO CHARGE MY CAR AT HOME OR USING PUBLIC CHARGERS?
Charging your vehicle at home is generally seen to be the most cost-effective way to charge. The exact cost of charging your EV at home will vary depending on the size of your vehicle’s battery and the rates you pay for your electricity.
However, this cost can be reduced if you schedule your charging for off-peak times such as overnight, where electricity rates are often cheaper.
WHERE CAN I INSTALL AN EV HOME CHARGER?
EV charge points can be installed for any property that has off-street parking. Usually, these charge points are attached to an exterior wall or garage near to where you park, in a place where they can safely be connected to the mains electricity supply.
We had Josh come out to fit an Ohme charge pod. He was excellent; quick, efficient and friendly. He even swept the floor after himself and changed something that he noticed had been left in an unsafe condition by our electricians. So impressed, would highly recommend.
Great experience from enquiry to fitting. Trishan who we spoke to a number of times, was so good and helpful and his customer service skills were excellent. Our fitter Rob was knowledgeable and extremely able, the fitting took some time and he explained what he was doing at all times. Happy to have him in the house and would readily recommend him and the company. A great experience for us 👍🏻👍🏻
Very happy with the service from YuCharge. They honoured the £300 government grant unlike some other suppliers I talked to and they were better priced than all the others.
Would recommend to any small business in Hampshire.
