GUIDE TO EV TYRES

INTRODUCTION

EVs are becoming a popular option for new and experienced drivers alike. But what many people don’t realise is that its more than just the power source that sets EVs apart from conventional fuel vehicles. If you’re thinking about switching, you will need to know the difference between EV tyres and regular tyres. Our guide takes you through everything you need to know about finding the right EV tyres for your vehicle and how to maximise their lifespan.

WHAT MAKES EV TYRES DIFFERENT TO REGULAR TYRES?

EVs are heavier than traditional cars, meaning their tyres have to bear heavier loads, as well as more torque on the wheels. Because of this, EV tyres are larger and heavier than regular tyres. They are also made to provide greater traction and enhanced grip on the road for more rapid acceleration and reduced stopping distances.

You may also notice that EVs make less noise than traditional cars. This is because they do not have a combustion engine, which is the main source of noise in other cars. Instead, EVs rely on electric motors which can operate almost silently. As a result, the only noise you are likely to hear when driving an EV is the sound of tyres rolling on the road. To minimise this noise further, EV tyres are made using foam inlays and additional rubber to help absorb sound, creating less noise pollution and a smoother driving experience overall.

You can tell the difference between EV tyres and regular tyres by looking for the ‘HL’ symbol on the sidewall, which stands for ‘heavy load’. These are made with reinforced materials and are able to bear greater weight than XL (extra load) tyres.

Whilst the initial cost of EV tyres may be higher, they are specifically designed to wear down at a slower rate than conventional tyres, so you will need to replace them less frequently, which will make up for the higher cost over time.

CAN YOU USE REGULAR TYRES FOR AN EV?

Whilst it is possible to use regular tyres for your EV, it is not recommended. This is because regular tyres are not built to withstand the same kind of weight that EV tyres are. This would not only put additional strain on your tyres, but they would also wear down and need replacing much quicker, making them less cost-effective than EV tyres. In fact, normal road tyres can wear down 30% quicker when used on an EV.

SUMMER VS WINTER TYRES FOR EVS

Just like regular tyres, you can get different types of EV tyres for summer and winter. Though not essential, for drivers living in areas that have more extreme climates, e.g. hot summers and snowy/icy winters, seasonal tyre swaps may be beneficial.

As a general rule, summer EV tyres are recommended for:

  • Warm/moderate temperatures above 7°C
  • Enhanced handling, braking, and performance in dry or wet conditions
  • Greater range and energy efficiency

Whereas winter EV tyres are recommended for:

  • Colder temperatures below 7°C
  • Maximum safety, grip, and shorter braking distances in winter weather
  • Snowy, icy, or slushy conditions

HOW CAN I MAXIMISE THE LIFE OF MY EV TYRES?

On average, EV tyres are expected to last between 20,000 and 40,000 miles, but there are ways that you can adapt your driving to help extend their lifespan.

Whilst driving, you should try to avoid overloading your EV, as too much added weight and pressure on your tyres can cause them to wear down quicker. You should also avoid driving over potholes and rough road wherever possible, as this can cause extra damage and wear to your EV tyres. Try to drive smoothly, avoiding sudden braking and aggressive acceleration.

It is also a good idea to routinely rotate your EV tyres every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. This is to ensure even wear, as front tyres will wear down quicker due to the unbalanced weight from the position of the battery. Another way to make sure your tyres don’t wear down unevenly is to routinely check your wheel alignment. If you feel your steering wheel pulling to one side, this may mean that you need your wheels realigned. Not only will this help keep your tyres even, but it will also improve your driving stability.

To keep your EV tyres in good health, be sure to regularly check the tread depth and tyre pressure. Your tyres should have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm, to ensure they maintain good grip on the road. The recommended PSI will vary between different models of car, so be sure to check your manufacturer’s guidelines for your specific vehicle. Doing this will help maintain your vehicle’s safety and responsiveness whilst driving.

Additionally, if your vehicle is parked for extended periods, it can cause flat spots to develop on the tyres, so it’s advisable to avoid long periods of inactivity, by moving your vehicle periodically whilst in storage. Another option would be to use jack stands, blocks or other supports to take the weight off your EV tyres when not in use.
